AMMONIA LEVELS IN FOOD-PRODUCING ANIMALS AND PETS

A COMPLETED APPROACH

Improvements in animal growth management carrying out preventive actions in matters of health and animal welfare is crucial to reduce the need of use of antibiotics and to obtain a higher production performance.

For example, dietary measures can help in order to prevent some diseases, strengthen the immune system, to develop a balanced gut microflora and contribute to better animal growth.

However, not only animal nutrition and feed is necessary to get the highest performance. At Bordas, we approach animal management in a comprehensive way from three areas: Nutrition, Health and Welfare.

In this blog we are going to explain how high nitrogen emissions generated in the production of different animals are not only harmful to the environment but also affect negatively their lives and those of their caretakers, causing diseases to farm animals, pets and humans.

nh3-amoniac

THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTROLLING AMMONIA GAS

Some studies have found that ammonia gas concentrations (NH₃) may increase up to 100 ppm in livestock stables and poultry facilities (Zhao et al. 2007; Arogo et al., 2001).

This nitrogenous emission, which may vary in function of the animal diet and live-conditions, is transformed into ammonia and other forms, such as uric acid and urea, through bacterial proliferation and other enzymatic reactions and it is excreted throughout the animal manures.

Achieving low ammonia emissions is crucial to successful animal production and contributes to a healthier livestock and birds.

Ammonia gas, which is compounded by atoms of nitrogen and hydrogen, is a colourless gas which is not only harmful for livestock, pets, and farmers, but also produces unpleasant characteristically pungent odour.

Some studies have shown that the chronic exposure to ammonia gas may produce health damages to animals and workers.

The negative effects on animal health may be consequences in proper growth, fertility, infections, and respiratory disease. Some respiratory tract damages observed are difficulty breathing, imitation of the trachea, proliferation of bacterias in lungs and pneumonia.

Furthermore, long-time exposition to high this compound may, for example, impair egg production in birds, or cause mastitis in cows.

Harmful effects of ammonia in humans can be a threat to worker’s health, producing effects as irritation of mucous membranes (eyes and the respiratory tract), developing headache, nauseas, and loss of appetite, among others.

8 TIPS TO CREATE A MORE COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT

To get livestock, diary and birds welfare and maintain animals in the safest and more comfortable environment in the housings, it is necessary to develop a proper animal performance and to adopt preventive checkpoints-measures individually or in combination as follow:

easy-access-feed

1. Easy access to feed: It may avoid naturally pecking at litter derived from “out-of-feed” sensation, preventing animal infections.

nutricion-animal

2. Supervise animal nutrition: Animal nutrition is vital for maintaining the health of animals. To reduce ammonia production it is recommended, for example, to reduce the protein content in the diet.

salud-intestinal

3. Take care of animal gut health: The intestine is the responsible for the absorption of nutrients and it contributes to the well-development of the immune system of the animals. The control of good intestinal health thus contributes to the maintenance of global health and good performance.

ventilacion-

4. Frequently accurate ventilation: Ammonia level negatively influences on the housing air quality. Due to this, a frequently accurate ventilation and air cleaning and purifying system is highly recommended.

temperatura-pH

5. Temperature and pH control: A regular control of these factors may help to limit the microbial proliferation in houses, reducing the generation of diseases such as diarrhea in new-borns and adults.

estiercol-eliminacion

6. Correct manure handling and regular removal: The nitrogen is excreted in urine and faeces. A correct management of these could help to avoid the high concentration of ammonia gas and may prevent the proliferation of microorganisms.

humedad-relativa

7. Relative humidity: Humidity plays a key role in the grow of bacterias and proliferation of insects. The control of this factor reduces animal stress and improves animal comfort.

nitrogeno-control-

8. Nitrogen content must be under control: The breakdown of nitrogen to form ammonia can be potentially detrimental to animal health and produces an undesirable odour that is unpleasant for animals and humans.

A CHALLENGE SUCCESSFULLY OVERCOME

As a manufacturer of feed additives and animal health and welfare ingredients, Bordas takes seriously the importance of maintaining the safety and high quality of our products, from the raw materials used until it is placed in the hands of the final consumer.

Always oriented to improve the animal’s health and fulfilling our commitment to sustainable development and the reduction of environmental emissions, our Animal Feed, Health and Welfare division is constantly developing innovative solutions.

Understanding the production of ammonia gas as a global issue that affects the environment and may harm health and welfare of animals and caretakers, Bordas develops tailor-made effective solutions that successfully overcome this problematic and maintain levels conducive of ammonia unpleasant odours.

Composition

This solution is centric based on the chemical composition of the essential oils from the Mediterranean Arc extracted naturally through distillation.

bordas-laboratorio

This product completely covers the quick appearance of the strong and unpleasant ammonia odour coming from urine and feces due to the bacterial proliferation in animal housing. The main objective is to create a healthier environment for the animal and farmer, acting as a green alternative to fight against microbial and enzymatic breakdown.

Benefits

producir-olor-agradable

Masking bad odours: Stable and sensorially persistent even in extreme conditions, the main active compounds derived from nature are aromatic substances mask bad odours of ammonia while producing a pleasant and long-lasting smell to get animals to perform at their maximum potential.

The following spider graph examines the intensity-sensorial at three different times (Time 1= 0 h, Time 2 =24 h and Time 3= 96 h) after absorption on a mineral carrier and after heat treatment over 90°C.

Reducir-humedad

Reduce humidity: Control relative humidity is one of the main factors that prevents respiratory damage in both humans and animals, avoiding the proliferation and the infectivity of pathogens, bacteria and fungi.

This product applied on a mineral base has a high drying capacity to reduce humidity on floors, litters, and other spaces, improving livestock and dairy animals, birds and pets health and welfare.

sistema-respiratorio-animal

Strength animal respiratory system: Airway diseases are a risk that can affect animal health and welfare. That is why maintaining a well-health respiratory system is crucial to produce a better performance and to develop high quality animals.

Some of the active core of this product is derived from eucalyptus plants, which improves respiratory animal capacity and reduces producing-costs.

Easy Product Application

Cleanness conditions and high-quality air have a positive effect on the happiness and health of any livestock animal and pets.

saludo-animal-bordas

This deodorizing product, made 100% in Seville (Spain), should be easily mixed with a solid mineral carrier such as diatomea sand and should be applied directly on the surface or mist in air, in both farm animals spaces and pets litter bedding.
