Bordas, the safe bet in the pharmaceutical industry

At Bordas we are leaders in the manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) based on citrus flavonoids. Through a perfect combination with science, we transform the power of nature into solutions to enhance health and well-being. In addition, we work with excipients of various kinds to complete any formulation in pharmacy. There is more, read on.

At Bordas we are experts in the extraction of natural flavonoids. These flavonoids are polyphenols of plant origin with antioxidant properties that provide multiple beneficial effects in various formulations, especially those designed for the pharmaceutical sector.

Our R&D department has developed and optimised the manufacturing process of these flavonoids used in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, agri-food and cosmetic industries, always in compliance with international quality standards.

Diosmin, a key flavonoid in pharmaceutical formulation

At Bordas we obtain the flavone Diosmin from Hesperidin, a flavonoid found naturally and in high concentrations in citrus fruits. Our Hesperidin comes from the extraction of the sweet orange (citrus sinensis), and from it, Diosmin.

Its outstanding properties are its cardiotonic, antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

– British Pharmacopoeia (BP).

We say that Diosmin is key in pharmaceutical formulation because it is of great value in the treatment of capillary and vascular fragility, as well as symptoms related to minor venous insufficiency, migraines and headaches.

It offers an unrivalled ability to help with problems such as haemorrhoids and swelling, bringing great relief to tired legs. It also prevents the formation of blood clots.

Hesperidin, the origin of each solution

Hesperidin is a natural ingredient obtained from the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and especially in pharmaceutical formulations, hesperidin is often taken in combination with diosmin due to the synergistic effect that occurs when they act together.

United States Pharmacopeia (USP).

MPFF, smaller size with more power.

MPFF (Purified Micronised Flavonoic Fraction) is obtained from hesperidin, specifically a mixture of Diosmin Hesperidin and other flavonoids, in an exact concentration and with a very fine particle size that, in its first results, seems to be more effective than even Diosmin.

Certifications

Applicable regulations

– GMP Diosmin

– GMP Hesperidin (in progress)

– CEP Diosmin

– Manufacturing licences for Diosmin and Hesperidin

PMFF (Purified Micronised Flavonoid Fraction) is manufactured at Bordas according to our vast experience with excellent results.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, these active pharmaceutical ingredients have a venotonic action and are mainly used for the treatment of pathologies of chronic venous insufficiency, such as tired legs, varicose veins, spider veins, as well as haemorrhoids.

Bordas also manufactures excipients designed to guarantee the stability, safety and efficacy of each final product, optimising each formulation to meet market expectations.

Neohesperidin DC: sweetens, masks and enhances.

Neohesperidin Dihydrochalcone, also called Neohesperidin DC, is an intensive sweetener based on Neohesperidin, a natural flavanone obtained from citrus fruits, especially Seville bitter orange (Citrus aurantium).

This sweetener has the power to mask bitter taste, which makes it particularly interesting for supplementing drug formulations and other nutraceutical or dietary products such as vitamins or minerals.

Neohesperidin Dihydrochalcone has an intense sweetening capacity. It is 1500-1800 times sweeter than sucrose and 20 times sweeter than saccharin.

Main features

Applicable regulations
– It has the same taste and functional characteristics as sucrose.

– Contains a low caloric density in sweetness equivalence.

– Does not damage the health of teeth.

– Metabolised normally and excreted unchanged.

– No allergenic, mutagenic, carcinogenic or toxic effects.

– Maintains chemical and thermal stability.

– Sufficiently soluble in aqueous solutions for most applications.

– Compatible with other food ingredients.

– Suitable for pharmaceutical use.

– USA Listed in the Grass list: GRN number 901.

– Food additive in Europe. E number: E-959.

How can Neohesperidin DC help us in pharmaceutical formulations?

This intensive sweetener manages to become a masking agent, thus avoiding the possible unpleasant bitter taste of various medicines such as antacids, antibiotics and vitamins.

In antacid preparations, levels of 10 to 30 ppm have been shown to improve palatability.

Natural solutions such as citrus flavonoids can be a powerful tool to complete different drug-type products that help to improve people’s health and well-being. At Bordas we work and research to continue expanding the range of application of citrus flavonoids, investing in studies that demonstrate a greater number of their properties and thus offering more solutions to the needs of the market.
