What are citrus flavonoids and how do they benefit animals?

Flavonoids act as powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, protecting cells from oxidative damage and enhancing immune response. In animals, this translates into improved gut health and increased resistance to various external effects. 

For its technological properties:

  • Citroneo: With flavour enhancer and masking agent properties.
  • Naringin: It is a major flavanone glycoside (flavonoid) obtained from grapefruit and other citrus fruits.

For their functional properties:

  • CBC: At Bordas we have our own study, carried out in collaboration with the University of Murcia and the company Nutrofar.

Own study: Benefits of CBC in the pig sector

To resolve the comparison between a feed supplemented with conventional antimicrobials: colistin, zinc oxide and amoxicillin, and a feed supplemented with Citrus Bioflavonoid Complex, at Bordas we have carried out our own study in collaboration with the University of Murcia and the company Nutrofar, and we can tell you that there is an improvement in intestinal health after a diet supplemented with 20% CBC.

During the weaning period, the pig in its piglet stage shows some digestive immaturity, evolving in its enzyme production and in the morphology of the intestinal villi. Piglets suffer a reduction in the digestibility of some nutrients, which is why the pig sector has sought natural alternatives to antibiotics, in line with consumer demands and the guidelines of the European Medicines Agency.

What was our objective at Bordas? To demonstrate that nutraceuticals are a very effective alternative to conventional antimicrobial additives in post-weaning.

Nutraceutical solution for animal welfare 

Nutraceuticals correct nutritional deficiencies, maintain adequate levels of certain nutrients and support specific physiological functions.  

The main objectives of this CBC self-study are as follows:

  1. To evaluate the effect of additives on intestinal mucosa and absorption capacity. 
  2. To evaluate the effect of additives on gut microbiota.
  3. To compare weight gain with different treatments.

Results of the CBC project study

✔ The nutraceutical formulation used is a valid alternative to conventional antimicrobials.

✔ An early effect of nutraceuticals at cellular level is observed.

✔ Increased intestinal crypt surface area, increased activity and regenerative potential of the intestinal mucosa.

✔ Fewer goblet cells per villus and less need for lubrication of the duodenal mucosa.

✔ A lower concentration of intraepithelial leukocytes was detected, which could be associated with better intestinal health.
