DIOSMIN

YOUR CIRCULATION SUPPORT

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a pathology of a progressive course, caused by the persistent inability of the veins to return the blood flow from legs to the heart. This pathology is commonly associated with varicose veins, ankle swelling, and night-time leg cramping.

This condition usually occurs with high blood pressure, that means an increase in the level of healthy blood pressure. This increase in tension causes dilation of the vessel wall, producing inflammation and varicose veins, as well as an extravasation of fluid into the surrounding tissues called edema.

The current treatments known for this pathology, mainly based on the activities of citrus bioflavonoids, pursue two main objectives: to alleviate the symptoms and to control the progression of the disease in order to prevent possible complications.

WHAT ARE THE BIOFLAVONOIDS?

Bordas is an important and well-recognised company in many international markets as food, flavours, fragrances, nutraceuticals, pharmaceutical and animal feed ones.

We manufacture flavonoids and other functional raw materials.

Additionally, we have developed our own line of fruit and vegetables derivatives tailor-made production (candied, cells, comminute, concentrates, dehydrates, fresh fruit, juices, peels, pulps, purees and slices), both organic and conventional:

Our main citrus derivatives:

diosmina
  • Bitter orange from Seville
  • Blood orange
  • Grapefruit
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Sweet orange
  • Tangerine

Although citrus fruits are known to be an excellent source of vitamin C, these fruits contain natural bioflavonoids too.

Bioflavonoids is a term used to describe biologically active molecules found naturally in different plants, named flavonoids, which improve health.

Each citrus fruit contains different types of flavonoids, in different amounts and concentration. The citrus fruits listed before contain high concentrations of the following bioflavonoids:

  • Diosmetin
  • Diosmin
  • Hesperidin, from Sweet Orange
  • Naringin, from Grapefruit
  • Narirutin
  • Neohesperidin, from Seville Bitter Orange
  • Nobiletin
  • Quercetin
  • Rutin
  • Tangeretin

WHY IS DIOSMIN SO SPECIAL?

Diosmin is a natural flavonoid mainly present in the peel of some citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons.

diosmina

Diosmin is a little-known flavonoid which possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties make diosmin interesting for different markets, particularly the pharmaceutical industry.

Due to the small concentration of diosmin in these citrus fruits, which is usually lower than the concentration of other bioflavonoids; Bordas has developed a process to obtain diosmin from another natural flavonoid, called hesperidin, which is present in higher concentration in the same citrus fruits.

PHARMACEUTICAL ACTION

diosmina

Diosmin is an interesting flavonoid to pharmaceutical, dietary supplements and nutraceuticals industries, as a consequence of its different scientifically corroborated beneficial properties that are attributed to human health.

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

Diosmin is a phlebotonic flavonoid, a class of therapeutic agents widely used in the treatment of different diseases related to the cardiovascular system.

In general, the regulated intake of diosmin improves vascular health from different approaches:

  • It reduces capillary fragility by increasing the tonicity of the blood vessels, so it significantly improves the correct circulation of blood when taken. This fact also produces a decrease in blood pressure in cases of venous hypertension.
  • It improves the return of the blood flow: This effect makes diosmin a very interesting active ingredient, which combats stasis associated with chronic venous insufficiency.
  • It increases the capillary resistance: Diosmin reduces the capillary permeability and diminishes the passage of harmful substances that could cause some adverse effects.
  • Because of all this effect, it is used as a treatment for different pathologies that are related to poor blood circulation, such as varicose veins and hemorrhoids.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY

Like most flavonoids, diosmin has anti-inflammatory activity. This effect is useful to treat and reduce pain in cases such as contusions, rheumatoid arthritis and, even, in post-operative treatments.

ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION

Thanks to this antioxidant property, typical of the flavonoids group, diosmin helps to fight against free radicals, preventing and decreasing oxidative stress.

LYMPHATIC CAPILLARIES

The intake of diosmin improves the lymphatic drainage by increasing the frequency and intensity of lymphatic contractions, and the total number of functional lymphatic capillaries. For this reason, diosmin is recommended in lymphoedema treatments and tired legs.

REDUCTION OF CHOLESTEROL

Diosmin has the ability to regulate cholesterol levels in blood, and thus produce beneficial effects on obesity.

HEADACHES

Thanks to the improvement of circulation and microcirculation, diosmin is also used to relieve headaches and migraines.

ADDED VALUE

Widely used: The use of diosmin is widely approved in many countries.

Scientifically proven properties: Several Scientific studies recognise that diosmin is beneficial in the treatment of all the illnesses described.

Synergy: In many occasions, diosmin is used in the pharmaceutical industry in combination with another natural citrus flavonoid called hesperidin. This combination of flavonoids makes a synergistic oral complex that increases the activities of each flavonoids taken separately. Therefore, this diosmin-hesperidin complex is widely used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, such as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and hemorrhoids (HD); obtaining a more effective and faster response.
